How to calculate ev charging time

Estimate how long an EV needs to charge between two battery percentages at a given charging power.

How the calculation works

The requested percentage change determines the energy added. Dividing that energy by charger power adjusted for charging efficiency gives time.

Example

A 75-kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% on an 11-kW charger at 90% efficiency takes about 4.55 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does this predict fast-charger tapering?

No. It gives an average-power estimate; real DC charging may take longer because power usually tapers at higher charge levels.

Pro Tips for EV Charging Time

  1. Use the power the vehicle can actually accept, not only the station maximum.
  2. Expect DC fast charging to slow as the battery approaches a high state of charge.

Common EV Charging Time Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering target charge below starting charge produces a negative result and does not represent a charging session.
