How to calculate corrected calcium

This calculator adjusts a measured calcium level for low albumin, since a large share of blood calcium is bound to albumin and low albumin can make total calcium appear falsely low.

How the calculation works

Corrected calcium = Measured calcium + 0.8 × (4 − Albumin).

Example

A measured calcium of 8.0 mg/dL with albumin of 2.5 g/dL: 8.0 + 0.8×(4−2.5) = 8.0+1.2 = 9.2 mg/dL corrected.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = [Measured calcium] + 0.8 × (4 − [Albumin]).

Is the Corrected Calcium Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Corrected Calcium

  1. This correction is most relevant when albumin is below the normal reference range (roughly 4 g/dL), which is common in illness and hospitalization.
  2. This is a widely used estimate but isn't perfectly precise — ionized calcium testing is more accurate when available and clinically important.

Common Corrected Calcium Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying this correction when albumin is already normal or high, where the adjustment isn't clinically meaningful or intended.
