How to calculate henderson hasselbalch

The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation calculates the pH of a buffer solution from the pKa of the weak acid and the ratio of conjugate base to acid concentrations.

How the calculation works

pH = pKa + log10(Base concentration ÷ Acid concentration).

Example

pKa of 4.75, base concentration 0.3M, acid concentration 0.1M: 4.75 + log10(0.3÷0.1) = 4.75 + log10(3) ≈ 4.75+0.48 = 5.23.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = [pKa] + log10([Conjugate base concentration] ÷ [Weak acid concentration]).

Is the Henderson Hasselbalch Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Henderson Hasselbalch

  1. This equation applies specifically to buffer solutions containing a weak acid and its conjugate base in comparable concentrations.
  2. When base and acid concentrations are equal, pH equals pKa exactly, since log10(1) = 0.

Common Henderson Hasselbalch Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying this equation to a solution that isn't actually a buffer (lacking significant amounts of both the weak acid and its conjugate base).

When to Use This Calculator
