How to calculate insulation batt

This calculator finds how many insulation batt packages are needed, factoring in a waste allowance for cuts and obstructions.

How the calculation works

Packages needed = (Area × (1 + Waste allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ Coverage per package.

Example

800 sq ft to insulate with a 10% waste allowance, packages covering 88 sq ft each: (800×1.10)÷88 = 880÷88 = 10 packages.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = [Area to insulate] × (1 + [Waste allowance] ÷ 100) ÷ [Coverage per package].

Is the Insulation Batt Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Insulation Batt

  1. Coverage per package varies by R-value and batt dimensions — confirm your specific product's rating.
  2. Cathedral ceilings and irregular framing typically need a higher waste allowance than simple, uniform stud bays.

Common Insulation Batt Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a standard-wall waste allowance for a more complex ceiling or irregular framing job that generates more cut waste.
