How to calculate paver count

This calculator finds how many pavers are needed for a patio or walkway, factoring in paver size and a waste allowance for cuts.

How the calculation works

Pavers needed = (Area × 144 ÷ (Paver length × Paver width)) × (1 + Waste allowance ÷ 100). Multiplying area by 144 converts square feet to square inches to match paver dimensions given in inches.

Example

200 sq ft area, 8×16 inch pavers, 10% waste: (200×144÷(8×16))×1.10 = (28,800÷128)×1.10 = 225×1.10 = 247.5, rounded up to 248 pavers.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = [Area] × 144 ÷ ([Paver length] × [Paver width]) × (1 + [Waste allowance] ÷ 100).

Is the Paver Count Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Paver Count

  1. Complex patterns (herringbone, basket weave) typically need a higher waste allowance than simple running-bond layouts due to more cutting.
  2. This already includes a waste allowance built into the formula — don't add an additional buffer on top unless your layout is unusually complex.

Common Paver Count Mistakes to Avoid

  • Adding an extra waste buffer on top of the already-included waste allowance percentage, effectively double-counting the buffer.
