How to calculate stud count

This calculator finds how many wall studs are needed by dividing wall length by stud spacing, including the starting stud.

How the calculation works

Studs needed = ceil((Wall length × 12) ÷ Spacing) + 1, converting wall length from feet to inches to match spacing given in inches.

Example

A 20 ft wall with 16-inch spacing: ceil((20×12)÷16)+1 = ceil(15)+1 = 15+1 = 16 studs.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = ceil([Wall length] × 12 ÷ [Stud spacing]) + 1.

Is the Stud Count Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Stud Count

  1. The +1 accounts for the stud at the very start of the wall, which the raw division alone would miss.
  2. Add extra studs for corners, door/window openings (jamb studs and headers), and T-intersections beyond this base straight-run calculation.

Common Stud Count Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using only this straight-run calculation without adding extra studs needed at corners and openings, which understates total studs needed for a complete wall.
