How to calculate sales tax total

This calculator adds sales tax to a pre-tax price to show the actual total you'll pay at checkout — useful for budgeting a purchase, comparing prices across states or cities with different tax rates, or double-checking a receipt.

How the calculation works

Total price = Pre-tax price × (1 + Sales tax rate ÷ 100). The tax rate is applied once, directly to the listed price, to produce the final amount charged.

Example

A $450 item with an 8.25% sales tax rate: total price = $450 × 1.0825 = $487.13. The tax itself is $37.13 on this purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for calculating tax backward from a total I already paid?

Not directly — this calculator goes from pre-tax price to total. To reverse it, divide your total by (1 + rate/100) to recover the pre-tax price.

Why do I see different tax rates in different parts of the same state?

Most states allow counties and cities to add local sales tax on top of the state rate, so the combined rate can vary block to block depending on jurisdiction boundaries.

Pro Tips for Sales Tax Total

  1. Look up your exact combined tax rate (state + county + city, where applicable) rather than guessing, since local rates can add several percentage points on top of the state rate.
  2. Some categories (groceries, clothing, prescription medication) are exempt or taxed differently in many states — check whether your purchase falls into a special category before assuming the general rate applies.
  3. For online purchases, the tax rate that applies is usually based on the shipping address, not the seller's location — use your own local rate for an accurate estimate.

Common Sales Tax Total Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering a tax rate as a decimal (0.0825) instead of a percentage (8.25) — this calculator expects the percentage form.
  • Forgetting that some purchases include additional fees (delivery, environmental, or luxury surcharges) that are separate from and not covered by this straightforward sales-tax calculation.
