How to calculate workout rest time

This calculator finds total rest time in a workout by multiplying the number of rest intervals by rest duration, converting to minutes.

How the calculation works

Total rest time = max(Sets − 1, 0) × Rest duration ÷ 60. Subtracting 1 from sets reflects that there's no rest needed after the final set.

Example

5 sets with 90 seconds rest between each: max(5−1,0)×90÷60 = 4×90÷60 = 360÷60 = 6 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How is Result calculated?

Result = max([Total sets] − 1, 0) × [Rest between sets] ÷ 60.

Is the Workout Rest Time Calculator free to use?

Yes — every calculator on Simple Calculator Tools is free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account.

Pro Tips for Workout Rest Time

  1. This calculates only the between-set rest time, not the active exercise time itself — add both together for total workout duration.
  2. Rest duration recommendations vary significantly by training goal — strength training typically uses longer rest periods than metabolic conditioning work.

Common Workout Rest Time Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting that the final set doesn't need a following rest period, which would overstate total rest time by one interval if not accounted for.
