Fuel cost = (Heat required ÷ (Efficiency ÷ 100) ÷ Fuel energy content) × Price per unit. This first finds actual fuel energy needed (accounting for efficiency losses), converts to fuel units, then multiplies by price.

100,000 BTU heat required, 90% efficient furnace, natural gas at 100,000 BTU per therm, priced at $1.20 per therm: Fuel needed = 100,000 ÷ 0.90 = 111,111 BTU ÷ 100,000 = 1.11 therms; Cost = 1.11 × $1.20 ≈ $1.33.
